You Can Break Patterns In Your Life

They say that an uncluttered living space helps you have an uncluttered mind. It’s a great theory, one I could definitely manage to a great degree as a single gal, living in a small apartment by myself. Fast forward a few years to marriage, a toddler, multiple moves including from one Province to another, and a super busy life and let’s just say that uncluttered doesn’t exactly describe my living space!

To help you understand my mindset, let me paint a picture for you of what I grew up with that was considered "normal" to my family.  My mother was your typical obsessive parent who had a super regimented life, no doubt nurtured by 1950s ideas of progress and efficiency in the home. Every day of the week had a specific chore. For example: groceries were bought on Tuesdays. Laundry day was Friday, but floors had to be vacuumed every single day, starting at a certain point in the house, no deviation allowed. Growing up with that  strict schedule drove me absolutely batty to the point that I swore that I would never be that way, ever!

Despite all of that, as my life went on I found myself exhibiting a similar type of inflexible thinking. I am sure that I adopted many of these behaviours as a way to control some aspect of my life, which, from the start had been very much out of my control. In my mind I created a “right way” of doing things. Dishes for example, had to be washed or loaded into a dishwasher a certain way. It literally made me anxious, nervous and irritated, to have someone else wash dish or load the dishwasher the “wrong way.”

 How does this happen?

When we repeat something to ourselves with a negative basis we create that negative belief. For example: if you say “I am a terrible dancer” you are creating a negative belief. If we reinforce that negative belief by constantly saying it, whether it is to ourselves and/or to others, we reinforce that negative belief to the point that it becomes true to us, and because we believe it to be true, we pass that message onto others as a factual and true statement.

Behaviour patterns work in the same way. For example,  without even realizing it, I was saying to myself “The dishes are only done right if they are done my way”. This is a belief with a negative basis.  By unconsciously repeating the statement to myself I had reinforced my belief to the point that seeing anyone else doing dishes in any other way that “my way”, resulted in an experience of anxiety, nervousness and irritation, and my insistance that I had to do the dishes.

How do I break the patterns?

The first thing to know if that you have to be ready for change. I was at a point in my life that I was working on myself and what I wanted out of my life, when I decided that my behaviours were not acceptable or fair to me, or  to anyone who was around me. I decided that my behaviours were too hard to live with.  I spent a great deal of time reprogramming myself. I didn’t know it then, but I was practicing self-hypnosis techniques. Self hypnosis can be used to both to fuel negative behaviours and help reduce  or remove them.

In order to break a pattern, you must create a new way of thinking. Then you must reinforcing that thinking in a positive way.

For myself and my strict thinking about dish washing,  I  forced myself to repeated  a phrase:  “My way is one of many ways to wash dishes. It’s okay if someone washes them a different way.”  I made a point of saying it out loud as hearing the words said reinforces the statement.  With time and consistency of repeating my message, I was able to break the pattern I had created for myself.  At first  I could not even watch anyone wash dishes! I had to walk away from the visual of it but that is okay, it is part of the process.

If you are trying to break a pattern, consistent, regular, positive reinforcement is what is needed. Tell it to yourself and make sure to repeat it to others. For example: "I am a great dancer!"  Sometimes you will have to walk away and give yourself a break, but it will get better. Reprogramming a belief takes time and patience with yourself. You can do it.

Be kind to yourself. We are all a work in progress. To this day, I still shake my head at the way some people wash dishes, but I have learned to just let it go.  I still prefer an ordered, clean space but I also know that sometimes, at some points in life, that is just not possible, and that is okay.

Have You Built A Tower For Yourself?

When I was a little girl, I used to dream that someone would rescue me from my life. I never thought of myself as a princess.  I was certainly never raised like one or taught to act like one, but I still wanted to be saved by someone.

No Knight To Rescue Me

As the years went by, no one came to save me. I waited like I was supposed to, but I saw no brave knights. Where was he? I wondered why I had no flowers, no gentlemanly kisses to my hand, and no offers of courting. In my heart, I knew that I was a good person, I prided myself on not being like the negative people around me. Every day I saw by example those who seemed to enjoy seeing people suffer. I consoled myself that I certainly didn’t get any joy out of anyone’s suffering, so therefore, I was sure to be rescued soon!

While I continued to wait, there was constant negativity directed at me. It made me  doubt myself and my actions more and more. I was building bricks for my tower without even realizing it. Soon I had built so many bricks for my tower, that it was almost blocking out all the light around me. I began only paying attention to the darkness. That darkness fed my fears, ignorance of life, false beliefs, and poor self esteem.

One day I had enough. I decided that sitting in a tower was pretty darn boring! I wanted to learn things! I wanted to live my life! I wanted to have my own voice! I looked around my tower and I realized that even though the negative people in my life had helped me build the bricks, it was me who had built my tower. No one had put me in that enclosed space but myself. So I looked around my tower, and I decided that things needed to change, because my prince wasn’t coming, this wasn’t Camelot, and I was no Guinevere!

Change The Message

Bring A Positive Voice

I had no idea where I was going to start or how, so I just started with something I already knew how to do. I know how to talk to myself. It sounds strange but so many people do it. The difference now was that I would only talk to myself with positive messages. Any time I heard myself saying something negative out loud or in my head, I would correct myself, and change the message to a positive one.

I forced myself to get out there and be social. When I met someone new, previously I would have told myself that the person "wasn’t interested in what I had to say". With the “new” me, I forced myself to say: “This will be fun. It’s exciting to meet new people. I wonder what interesting conversations we will have?”

At first it was incredibly hard for me to even think positive thoughts! I struggled to maintain control and not panic when I spoke to new people. Often I would pretend that I was excited to meet someone new, but inside I was shaking with insecurity. Eventually,  forcing myself to do it over and over again, I began to realize that it wasn’t an act anymore. I really did enjoy meeting new people and having interesting conversations. Once I could get out of living in my own thoughts all the time, I started to observe body language and mannerisms, and I saw  that other people were nervous too! I was not alone after all.

Self Hypnosis

I didn’t know it at the time, but I learned years later what I was doing is a form of Self Hypnosis. Self Hypnosis is something that most people do all day long, but unfortunately, many people give themselves negative messages. Negative self talk only causes a reinforcement of negative patterns in the brain. What does that mean?  It means that if all you see, hear and speak is negative, then  you will unconsciously look for negative in every situation. You will attract, and feel negative all the time.

With that one action of continued positive self-talk, I had kicked out some the bricks in my tower to let more light in. By doing that, I was able to see that there was hope in my life, so I kept encouraging myself to try new things. I went to social events that I never would have gone to before. I forced myself to talk to people, sometimes people I knew, mostly people I didn’t know. Sometimes that didn’t go very well, because I ended up talking to people who were stuck in their own negative patterns, but I kept trying.  The braver I got, the stronger I felt.  I volunteered in hospitals so that I would be forced to interact with people. One volunteer position was in a hospital gift store so I could learn new skills without the pressure of worrying about being fired if I messed up!

Don't Let Fear Cloud Your Path

Let The Light In

Everyone has their own path in life, and only YOU get to decide how you will view it. If you only see the rocks you stumble on, or the animals that try to bite you, you will miss some incredible aspects of your journey along the way.  If you hold fear in your heart, and build up your tower so you never move forward, never feel the touch of another; never move on from past negative experiences, you will have deprived yourself of a full life and an amazing journey.

As the years have gone by and my life has gone up and down, with a variety of negatives and positives. Everyone is a work in progress as no one is perfect; no one is without fault. Today my tower has some bricks left. They are pretty strong and resistant to breaking, but that is okay.  I am working on them, and loving myself, knowing the light can reach me now.

SELF HYPNOSIS ~ The Power Within

Self hypnosis can help motivate you to make positive changes in your life.
Sometimes life can be a real struggle.  When you are sick, or your home is messy, work is exhausting and  maybe your pets are demanding; all you want to do is pull the covers over your head and go back to sleep! Simple motivation can be a challenge never mind continuing your path of learning and spiritual growth!

Help Yourself With Self Hypnosis

Self Hypnosis To The Rescue!

Hypnosis can help you find your motivation to make positive changes in your life. Give  yourself positive messages and encouragement. It can be anything that will help you be more proactive. Simple instructions like: "Wash half the dishes and then you can have that next cup of coffee”  Or “I will fold this laundry and then feel great when it's gone."

Whether you say it out loud or in your own head, giving yourself positive messages and encouragement are all methods of Self Hypnosis.  We do this every day without even thinking about it. When you drive home and don’t remember how you got to your driveway is a form of Self Hypnosis.

Hypnosis Is Relaxing

Hypnosis is something that often makes people feel scared or uneasy. People often think of it as something  mystical or magical  but that is not Hypnosis.  We are often in a Hypnotic state but we don’t even realize it. Think of that moment when you are just about to fall asleep. Your whole body feels relaxed and heavy, and it seems too much effort to open your eyes or even move a limb. That is a Hypnotic state. You have allowed yourself to relax, not only you body but your mind as well. It is at that time, that you may start to dream or have random thoughts or images. What you are doing is allowing your subconscious mind to be present. You are allowing yourself to relax and receive whatever information is there for you.  Are you still in control? Could you make yourself wake up if you wanted to? Of course you could. You are still in control of your mind and your body, just as would be in a Hypnosis session with a Hypnotherapist.

A Hypnotic State Is Very Relaxing

Seeing A Hypnotherapist For Help

If you feel like Self Hypnosis is great but you need more help, you can visit a Hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapy gives you a chance to decide what direction you want to go in, and what you want to work on. A certified Hypnotherapist will help guide you to reach a relaxed state, to then work on whatever you need to.

What can you work on in a Hypnotic state? The simple answer is anything you want to, as long as you are open and honest with yourself and  are willing to change.  Smoking and food addictions, stress, anxiety, breaking patterns, and so much more can be helped with Hypnotherapy, but really it is any issue that you feel is detrimental or disruptive to your quality of life.

Hypnosis Can Help You To Stop Smoking

It's Not For Everyone

There are certain individuals that will either have a harder time or may not be able to be helped with Hypnosis.  Mental illness such as Schizophrenia or persons with a mental deficiency will most likely not be able to be helped, as they are either not able to maintain the concentration and relaxation needed to access their subconscious mind for an extended period of time, or they may be in a subconscious state all the time.  When that happens, the connection to the present moment is not as stable, and harder to maintain for the purposes of self-realization and examination of behaviors and patterns, and beliefs.

So dear readers tonight when you find yourself drifting off to sleep take a moment and enjoy the physical sensation of that relaxed state. Enjoy the sensation that of all of your muscles are relaxed; notice how calm you feel and perhaps even hear the sound of your gentle breathing.  Feel the softness of your pillow cradling your head and the warmth of your blanket.   Notice how you feel peaceful, relaxed and open to receive whatever your subconscious puts forth as you are in a wonderful Hypnotic State.
