What is a spiritual journey? How it is “supposed” to be? What do most people imagine? Going away to an amazing retreat full of enlightening moments? Peaceful meditations surrounded by beautiful nature, wonderful meals resplendent with fresh produce and healthy choices…..ahhhh so lovely isn’t it? Anyone could find peace and enlightenment in that setting couldn’t they? What a lovely dream that not many of us have the opportunity to experience but would love to if we had the chance.
What if you have kids? What if “Mommy wake up!” is your literal crack of dawn wakeup call? Feeling peaceful? not exactly the tranquil sound of nature is it?
Welcome to the reality of modern spirituality for a parent. Peaceful moments are few and far between, and even the sanctity of a few moments alone in the bathroom is more often than not suddenly interrupted by a little voice from the other side with an urgent demand. So what is a parent to do? How can a person possibly hope to work on themselves if they never get a break?
Take 5 Minutes A Day For Yourself
Whenever and wherever it can happen, take five minutes to do something for yourself. The thought of taking time for yourself is a difficult concept to many parents, especially for many mothers. Moms tend to feel that they have to do it all, but doing it all for everyone else, leaves precious little time for the most important person of all~ you.
Do Something You Love
Even if you have dishes piled in your sink and a growing stack of laundry waiting to be washed. Even if your floors could use a cleaning, and you can't even think about the piles of paper taunting you, take five precious minutes for yourself.
Do what you love for a full five minutes. Read, dance, sing, make a great cup of something your enjoy like tea, coffee or hot chocolate and actually enjoy it while it’s still hot! For those five glorious minutes you are going to be only thinking about your needs. Breathe and enjoy. Take note of your senses as you do. Notice the smell and taste of your drink, or the sensation of your body moving as your dance, The sound of the music filling you room, or the sight and feel of the pages of your book in your hands. Try not to feel guilt or shame during this time, it’s okay to cater to yourself for a little while.
What does it accomplish? You allowed yourself to be with you, fully and completely with no interruptions. You took five minutes to connect with yourself again. You just took a five minute meditation. Didn’t it feel great? The point of taking five minutes for yourself is a baby step towards being able to connect with yourself again and find the inner peace you need to keep going with the daily slog, because let's be real, some days are a real challenge!
Fully enjoy your five minutes and then continue on with your day. When you need to, you can then tap into those good feelings that you allowed yourself to feel. Creating a feeling of positive energy is a big step towards mind-body-spirit healing and a great beginning step in any spiritual journey.
